On the Couch w/ a Natural: Selena B.

Have you always been natural?
-No. I permed my hair when I was 12 and kept it relaxed throughout high school.

How many years have you been natural?
-I’ve been natural for 5 years. August 1st is the anniversary of my Big Chop!

Why did you decide to go natural?
-I wanted a change.
My freshman year of college as a dance major I was spending money on a wash-and-set on Saturdays that would be a hot mess by Wednesday from sweating in class. I didn’t know whether to dance with my hair wrapped in a scarf or with my hair out. I felt like I was wasting $20 every other week. I eventually started to do my own wash-and-set to save money. Towards the middle of my freshman year, I became more involved in the New York dance scene and every time I performed, I’d have to tease my straight hair to have a cool style. It was unhealthy and a hassle so in January of 2006, I stopped getting relaxers. I also started to notice other professional dancers with huge curly hair and I fell in love! I thought it was so beautiful and it definitely had an influence on my choices. By July, I’d had six months of new growth and I liked the look and texture of my roots. I asked friends what they’d think if I cut off my hair and no one supported the idea, nor did they believe I would do it. I went online to research natural hair salons and I made an appointment at Afrogenix in Manhattan. On the sunny afternoon of August 1st, I chopped it all off! I wasn’t too worried about what anyone else thought of it, because I loved it. It’s funny because I was the first person I knew in my college with natural hair, sporting the big chop. By time I was a senior though, all the black females I knew were either natural, in transition or getting ready to chop it all off. I like to think I have something to do with that. It’s also fun being natural at home with my family. We were all relaxed at one point in our lives but now my mother and cousin have gorgeous locks, my sister and aunt are natural as well, and my father is a man who supports a woman rocking her own hair, in its natural state.

What is your regimen?
- Most nights I put my hair in a few twists and sleep with a satin scarf. In the morning I let my hair get damp in the shower and I style it with different products. I straighten it about twice a year to check on the length and thickness, and get a trim. I just trimmed it yesterday! I only wash my hair with shampoo once a month, sometimes less often. But I do co-washes often. (Washing with conditioner only)

What products are currently your staples?
- My staple product in the beginning was Miss Jessie’s curly pudding and buttercreme, but now my hair is longer and requires too much of the product, which is wildly expensive.
My staples now are shea butter, mango butter, coconut oil, rosemary, tea tree, jojoba oil, castor oil, emu oil, aloe gel and aloe juice. I don’t use all of them at once! [giggles] Nor do I use them everyday. But I switch it up between these staple products.

What advice can you give to those think of going natural?
- Do it for you. It’s not about what anyone else thinks. Your hair is your crowing glory and how you feel about it is all that matters.

What's the best thing about being natural compared to being relaxed?
- I can wet my hair in the shower daily, with no worries and no shower cap!

Would you ever consider going back to relaxers?
- I would never go back to relaxers. The only time I think about it is when I want to wear a weave, which I’ve only done once because I can only get a full weave with a bang. That’s because I don’t want to leave any section of my hair out; it would have to be straightened everyday and that section, would be drastically damaged compared to the rest of my hair once I take out the weave. So now, If I wear a weave, I’ll clip in the extensions and take them out at night. The only other times I think about a relaxer is when my blow-out or wash-and-set gets frizzy.

If you had 1 product to recommend, what would it be?
- I recommend using Shea butter- raw, unrefined, unbleached Shea butter. It can be the base to a D-I-Y moisturizer. You can add it to coconut oil, rosemary, castor oil, or aloe juice, or use it alone. Your hair won’t be dry, nor will it be ridiculously dripping with grease as though you’ve used Soul Glo (ref: coming to America)

What's one trick you found that works with your hair?
Wetting it everyday is the trick. It needs water like a plant, not too much and not too little. I have another trick though, Do not comb it when dry. I ONLY comb my hair when there is conditioner in it; so yes I comb my hair once a week or bi-weekly.

2011 BET Awards Tresses: Hits and Straight Mess

If you were under a rock, then you missed the 2011 BET Awards. I personally enjoyed the show and was dancing my butt off in the living room as Beyonce performed "End of Time" (my FAVORITE song off her new 4 album).
Now that the red carpet pictures are up...I'm going to take the time out to showcase the Hits and Straight Mess..
HITS

Love this wig on Toni

This cut is sooo sleek and precise

Love the waves on Jennifer. I've always loved her locks on BBW

Her curls look so sleek and bouncy and most importantly...healthy!

Not really feeling this wig 100%. Looks a little tilted but still looks fab on Ms. Kelendria

The blonde is washing her skin out but the cut is FAB!

Lala is showing how do do a protective style and still look FAB at the same time!

Michelle's long black locks look amazing on her! Makes me wanna keep my hair black.

Necole's curls looks so defined and shiny. Love LOVE LOVE!!!

The color and curls suits her perfectly...along with that Summer glow.

Love this wig blunt cut wig on Nicki....really...I'm a HUGE fan of this wig...lol . Her acceptance speech had me ROTFLMAO!

Tika's is rocking a sleek and shine style. You could never go wrong with this style.
Looks like humidity caught the best of Toccara's hair....she still looks gorgeous..not sure if she's natural...

STRAIGHT MESS

This wig is just a mess...I think it's the color : /

Sigh...Alicia Keys...I know what her stylist was thinking but....maybe....I have no words for this style. It's too much going on here and the fish braids looks ATROCIOUS!

Looks like Diamond forgot to take the pin curls out...and what's with the edges??? Too much going on here....

Elise boo....where's ya edges???? A middle part would have been a more suitable style for you ma.

Eve took a stab at the side braid...but um...I'm not sure what's going on with the top of your hair...

Which hairstyle did you like the most?

Update on my Bobbi Boss Ocean Wave Install

Hey guys,

It’s been two weeks since installing this weave and I’m still in love with it. I believe that me sealing the wefts before installing has helped tremendously with the shedding. I used two full packs which makes the hair so thick and sexy! I love the way the hair looks when wet but right now I’m experimenting with its curls. This week I’ve been doing 4 big pin curls and then pin curl my bangs and found that this is a simple routine to do before bed. When I wake up I just take the pin curls out and finger comb my hair and I have vixen hair. Or if I’m really lazy, then I would just take all of the hair (except my bangs) and twist it into a bun. Then when I get up in the morning the hair will be wavy. I’m definitely going to try to keep this hair in for 3 months. This will be the longest I’ve ever kept a weave in. And I’m so loving my jet black hair!!!! So I’m seriously thinking of dyeing my whole hair black (semi-permanent of course) when I take this weave out.

I finally washed my hair along with the weave on Sunday and everything went well. As I was washing my hair I thought “maybe I should do a video on my washing routine” and I will. Lol

In my next video, I will show you how I not only wash the Bobbi Boss weave but also how you can wash your hair while it’s in an install. My method (which a lot of girls on BlackHairMedia.com use) is the easiest way to get to your scalp without messing up the braids underneath. Also, I will show you how I moisturize my scalp while in a straight weave and how I style the Bobbi Boss hair.

I hope you guys have been enjoying my videos :-)

Love you all! xoxo

10 Great Tips for Healthy Hair During The Summer

I don’t know about you guys, but I’m totally syked that summer is almost here! We had a heat wave in NYC on Wednesday and Thursday and I loved every minute of it. I was off on Wednesday so I decided to make the best of it. I went to the movies with my lil sis, her boo and my boo to see the new X-Men movie (which I loved!!!!), went to the beach for a cool walk, went to an all you can eat buffet and then went to a park to just chill. Gotta love those summer days.
I'm sure you guys are too! But, let's not neglect our hair ladies. Here are some tips to keep in mind during this wonderful season:
  1. If you start to notice that your hair seems to be a little dry or lacks luster. Try adding a few drops of sesame oil (it has a natural UV protector) to the ends of your hair before you leave home.
  2. Give your hair a rest from your flat iron, blow dryer and curling iron during summer months. Air dry whenever possible or try easy chic styles. Check this post out if you need help -> Hair Style To Try: Side Braid
  3. Hair that is regularly exposed to the sun needs regular deep conditioning treatments and moisture replenishment. For extra conditioning treatment apply deep conditioner to tresses (damp or dry) then wrap in a shower cap or plastic bag (lol…the ghetto way).  Allow conditioner to soak into damaged hair sections for an extended period or overnight for extra repair and re-moisturizing benefits. When I sleep with conditioner in my hair I like to put a wool hat on top of the plastic bag for the extra steam. This is especially great for those like me who don’t have an AC and sweat like a pig at night…LOL
  4. Hanging out in the sun without protection for your hair and scalp is the worst thing you can do. Use leave in hair products with SPF protection when you know you will be out in the sun for a long period of time. My FAVORITE product to use is Luster’s Pink Oil Moisturizer Sheen with Sunscreen.
  1. Let’s not forget those roots. Drink plenty of liquids to keep roots and strands flush with fluids.  Water will also keep your skin soft and plump.  Now ladies, I know that some of you may enjoy those lovely iced cold alcoholic drinks (Pina Coladas and Margaritas), keep in mind that they can dehydrate skin and strands.  Water is always the best choice for your tresses.
  2. Saw this tip online: “Try to avoid parts in your hair all together! Use a fashionable headband or scarf to slick hair back. But if you must part your hair, use a sun specific product with a UV protectant, like Riccardo Maggiore Rinnova Texturizer, a unique leave-in treatment which contains sunscreen agents to protect hair from damaging UV rays.”
  3. Use a clarify shampoo to get rid of dirt, salt and chlorine build up.
  4. Avoid washing your hair in hot water, use warm or cool water instead, the heat can dry out and/or damage your hair.
  5. Avoid hair products with formaldehyde or alcohol in it. These ingredients are known to dry out hair, try to use natural products that are gentler.
  6. Another great tip I saw on-line: “Before going into the pool/ocean wet your hair, this will decrease the absorption of chlorinated/salt water into your hair.”
