Question from a reader - Crystal

Hey! I just came across your hair journey going through different websites about sew ins. Well, I need a little hair advice. I'm going on 16 and I love the look of long hair. When I was little, my hair used to be passed my shoulders. Now, it's a little above, some parts touching. Meaning, I have bad hair breakage, hair is damaged, split ends *again* and I hate cutting my hair!

I need a lot of advice..
Do sew-ins help grow hair?
What did you do to grow your hair?
Any products that indeed WORK?

I was going to start using Biotin (Hair, Skin and Nail pills), but I'm not very sure!

Help me? If you can. I know it's going to take patience, but I'm tired of growing my hair and then it just falls off/breaks off.

Hi Crystal,

First I must commend you on wanting to switch to a healthy hair lifestyle! I could help you out.

1. I've used sewins to help my hair grow throughout my entire hair journey. Remember that while your hair is in a sew in...you should NOT neglect your hair underneath.

  • Make sure that your braids and weave isn't in too tight. This causes stress on your hair and WILL cause damage to the scalp which can equal balding.
  • Always keep your hair moisturized underneath
  • I would wash and deep condition your hair at least every two weeks
  • Make sure your hair is fully dried underneath to prevent mold and a smell
  • DO NOT leave your install in for no more than 3 months!!!! Your hair WILL dread and this can cause huge setback.
  • Give your hair a break in between installs. Wait at least a week before putting a new install in
  • If you are relaxed wait at least 2 weeks until putting a new install in your hair.
  • If you plan to relax after taking an install out...wait at least a week.

Right now I use 3/4 wigs. This helps me manage my hair better than I would if I have a sew in. I have numerous videos on YouTube showing how to make one and how to maintain your hair while wearing a sew in or 3/4 wig

There's no magic product out there that will make your hair grow faster. It's how you take care of your hair and body that will make your hair prosper. Some people get growth spurts in their growth cycle. I experienced one this past summer.

Vitamins, healthy eating, exercise and drinking lots of water helps with growth. I like to massage my scalp daily to help my blood flow through on my scalp which encourages growth.

The vitamins I currently take is MSM and GNC Ultra Nourish. Some good vitamins that I found that also worked was Nioxin's Recharge vitamins and Hairfinity. Make sure when you take vitamins that you drink LOTS of water to help the vitamins absorb in your body or you will break out!!

My favorite products at the moment is:
  • Shampoo - EverCreme Intense Nourishing Shampoo
  • Moisturizing Conditioner - Dove Intense Repair Conditioner
  • Light Protein Conditioner - Organic Root Stimulator Olive Oil Replenishing Conditioner
  • Mosturizers - Organic Root Stimulator Olive Oil Moisturizer and S-Curl
  • Oils - Castor, Peppermint, Coconut, Jojoba, Grapeseed Oil
  • Heat Protector - Tressemme Thermal Creations Heat Tamer Spray

The key to healthy hair growth is:
  1. Retention. Wearing a weave helps protect your hair from damaging elements like heat, the cold weather and even the wind!
  2. Keeping your hair moisturized with the RIGHT products! Avoid any product that contains mineral oil or petroleum!!!!
  3. Deep Condition WEEKLY....once a week with a moisturizing conditioner and twice a month with a light protein conditioner.
  4. Trim the damage hair away. You don't have to snip it all right away but make sure you snip them.

One last advice I would give you that has helped me SO much in my hair journey was when I read the book "The Science of Black Hair". If you have an iPhone, Kindle or Android you can purchase the book for only $9.99 from Amazon and put it on the Kindle App. This book is the BIBLE to any persons healthy hair journey. Audrey Davis-Sivasothy (the author) even lists the right products to buy to help you when and while you are on your healthy hair journey!

Hope this helps!
